Tootgarook Wetlands

About

Tootgarook

Tootgarook is a quiet bayside suburb between Rosebud and Rye, with a sheltered beach out front and one of the Peninsula's most important wetlands tucked in behind.

There's no real main street, just a handful of spots along Point Nepean Road, and that's exactly why it's so peaceful.

Featured Spot

Tootgarook Wetlands

The largest shallow freshwater marsh left around Port Phillip and Western Port, home to frogs, wetland birds and more than 130 recorded bird species. Boardwalks, short tracks, viewing platforms and bird hides make it easy to explore on foot, and it's free to enter. Dogs aren't allowed.

Beaches

The Beach & Foreshore

Tootgarook's beach is a calm, shallow stretch of Port Phillip Bay, part of the long Capel Sound beach, with a boardwalk through to the bathing boxes. The foreshore reserve has camping right behind the sand, and a boat ramp opposite Burdett Street is open from spring to the end of April.

Eat & Drink

There's no main street here, but there are good places to stop along Point Nepean Road: The Kitchen for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Veraison for a special occasion, and plenty more in Rye next door.

Accommodation

Stays here are mostly holiday houses a short walk from the beach, with foreshore camping for something simpler and more to choose from in Rye and Rosebud.
