About

Somers

Somers sits quietly at the edge of Western Port, a scatter of holiday houses and a long stretch of safe, sandy beach that curls away toward Sandy Point. It's the kind of town locals have always kept close to themselves — no strip of shops, just a general store, a yacht club and the bush and wetlands behind it.

Originally called Balnarring East, the town was renamed in 1925 after Lord Somers, the Governor of Victoria who ran a boys' camp at nearby Coolart. That same stretch of country is now the Coolart Wetlands and Homestead, a heritage-listed mansion and bird sanctuary just inland from the beach.

Featured spot

Coolart Wetlands & Homestead

A 27-room Victorian mansion built in 1897 by pharmaceutical magnate Frederick Grimwade, set among wetlands, gardens and woodland walking trails on the shores of Western Port. Free to explore daily, with a bird observatory, picnic lawns and four walking tracks through the reserve.

Village Store

Somers General Store

Somers has never needed much more than this. Trading since 1927, the general store and post office has long been the town's one real gathering point — coffee, supplies and a place to run into everyone you know.

Beaches

Somers Beach

A long, continuous stretch of safe, sandy beach running east all the way to Sandy Point, with Merricks Creek slipping out behind the dunes. Calm enough for a swim, quiet enough that it still feels like the locals' beach it's always been.
