About
Bittern
Bittern is a quiet residential town at the top of Western Port, built around the railway line and a small shopping strip rather than a beach or a headland. Its real drawcard lies just out of sight — the wetlands and mangroves of Warringine Park, tucked along the coast toward Hastings.
There's no strip of cafes here, just a compact neighbourhood centre, a Sunday market at the station, and a lot of quiet suburban streets backing onto farmland and bush.
Natural Feature
Warringine Park
One of the best-kept secrets on the Mornington Peninsula, Warringine Park protects coastal wetlands, mangroves and woodland along Western Port — including some of the southernmost mangrove stands in the world. Boardwalks and trails wind through salt marsh and bushland, with over 110 recorded bird species, from egrets to the endangered Lewin's Rail.
Eat & Drink
A pizza shop, a Thai kitchen, a cafe and a small IGA are about all Bittern needs — clustered together at Bitternfields, the town's one proper shopping stop.
Featured spot
Bittern Market
Every Sunday morning, Rotary runs a market at Bittern Station, right opposite Bitternfields — fresh vegetables, honey, plants, secondhand goods and a few food and coffee stalls. Come early for the best of the produce.
